Fact Set #1: Pipe fitter

Yesterday, a Springfield pipe fitter, employed by Gross Engineers, suffered third-degree burns when he accidentally touched a 15,000 volt power line with a piece of angle iron as he was installing new pipes.

center line and struck his vehicle.

1) Your "immediate ID" version works better -- you get to the point more quickly.

Delayed ID: Remember not to with a lead with the "when" or "where" of a story. Start with the most important and/or interesting info, generally the "who" and/or "what" of the story.

Also, you don't have to tell me everything in the lead. It's enough to know he's a Springfield pipe fitter -- adding the company name just bogs things down.

2) Ask yourself what makes this story newsworthy -- for example, a simple car accident isn't news, but when someone is seriously injured in a car accident, it is. So focus on the guy who was injured in your leads.
